• I chose as subjects of this portrait the twins of one of the single mother families I've been documenting - with many of their toys - to demonstrate just how many toys children are trained to consume from a young age.

One interesting thing to note about this family's consumption is that their mother does not have much income (as she is on disability), and struggles with trying to manage the challenge of raising Autistic twins on her own. Their grandmother helps out fairly often, but their step-grandfather insists on buying the twins a bunch of toys. Additionally, when various organizations have tried to help her over the years, they've often done so by giving them toys at Christmas.

Their mother has really needed other types of help - such as with navigating the special needs aspect of the public school system, and now with homeschooling her boys - but instead she has the additional challenge of trying to get rid of the toys. An interesting symptom of the twins' autism is that they lack imagination, so toys such as blocks and legos are particularly untouched in the house, yet, they keep track of the toys they have, even the unused ones, so when she tries to pass the toys onto other children who may want or need them more, the boys become unconsolable. As such, she's kept all of these toys until she can figure out how to sneak them out of the house.

 • Carol was kind enough to be a part of my anti-consumerism project by sharing her story about how owning too many things has negatively affected her life. We did pull her stuff out of her closets and put it all on display to make this photograph. Her story, in her own words, can be found on my blog: http://memphisphotog.blogspot.com/2014/02/day-46-2014-project-365-carols.html.

 • Mary came to Memphis in 1999 to work for the Memphis Flyer and has stayed and become one of the people that makes Memphis awesome. When she was a writer & editor for the Flyer, she covered many community issues including education, neighborhood safety, urban development and historic preservation. Mary want on to work for Memphis city Mayor Wharton after her time at the Flyer.

In addition to her focus on community issues, Mary also has a big love for fashion, and did an 'on the street' interview of people she spotted with outstanding fashion sensibilities for her weekly Style Sessions. It was her love of style and of historic architecture that inspired the choice of Molly Fontaine's Lounge for her photo shoot.

 • Astrid French is yet another cool Memphis woman who fills many different roles. In addition to her role as mom and wife, she is a Montessori teacher of African drumming, is a yoga instructor, makes jewelry and much more. This is her son Lincoln who is one of the many babies birthed by midwife Amy Stewart-Banbury. Astrid's cool fashion sense shines through with the striped tights and awesome colorful skirt.

 • April Novak (aka Rowdy Ann) is a Burlesque performer for the Memphis Belles. She has a big love for her cats and vintage clothing and is "addicted to buying junk," particularly things like etiquette books, old fashion mags, weird dolls, paint by numbers, big eye pictures, and bubble bath bottles. All of the Memphis Belle performers do pin-up photography in addition to their burlesque performances, and they create their own costumes and style (hair/make-up/routines) for each show.

In addition to her "pin-up" side, she has worked in the fashion industry in NYC, performed in a punk band with her brother, and is now completing work towards her Master's Degree in Education and teacher's license. She is originally from a small town in west Tennessee, and has lived a few places, but chose Memphis as her home a few years ago.

 • Angela is a staple of Cooper Young and Midtown Memphis with her awesome tattoo & body piercing studio, Underground Art. She has been in business for more than 18 years now, and is weathering even these tough economic times. Her shop has been voted Best Tattoo shop in the Memphis Flyer for the last 12 years straight, so if you want a tattoo or piercing, this is the place to go. She also supports various local groups (such as Friends for Life, WKNO and Memphis Roller Derby) by providing tattoo certificates for auctions/fundraisers. Her shop is a cool place with great art both inside and out, so even if you don't want a tattoo, you should stop by and check it out. When she's not running her business, she is always immersed in the arts in some way, whether it's writing or photographing, and she has even produced one local play.
